HIC SUNT MONSTRA - A QUICK MÖRK BORG BESTIARY

 HIC SUNT MONSTRA

a collection of creatures converted from that old roleplaying game

"Flying Monster" by Robert Caney

I made these conversions quite some time ago, then I forgot I did them. I don't even remember why I created them. This morning I found the original file again, so I thought that it would be nice to do something with these monsters, and posting them in the wild seems a good idea to me. Besides, I wanted a distraction from the Cairn-centric posts that I've been writing lately. I recon there is a #morktober going on and this doesn't fit any category, but outside at the wrong time is better than imprisoned forever.

I suggest you save this page in pdf or something.

Alces, Half Elk Guardian

HP 11 Morale 8 Leathery skin -D2 Antler/spear D6

Special: Big and clumsy, easy to hit (DR10). Can summon creatures to aid it.

THIS SOLITARY CREATURE WAS A PROTECTOR OF WOODLAND CREATURES, BEFORE THE WORLD DARKENED. It is as tall as an elephant, with the arms and torso of a human but head, antlers and lower legs of an elk. It often uses large wood and bone spears to punish or slay those who defile woods. Once per day an alces may summon D3 creatures to assist it. Use Eat Pray Kill to determine which ones.

Caryatid, Dryad

HP 6 Morale 6        Wooden body -D4 Branch D4

Special: Can instantly move within trees and roots. Dies only if her tree dies.

CARYATIDS WERE BEAUTIFUL FEMALE TREE SPIRITS WHO LIVED IN TREES, IN WOODLAND SETTINGS OR DENSE FORESTS. They used to be very shy and nonviolent, but also very suspicious of strangers. Now they live in grim forests, their appearance mimicking that of crooked trees, stalking anyone who disturbs their peace and if necessary beating them to a pulp. Sometimes they also lure their victims into their trees; unless rescued immediately, such victims will never be seen again. Caryatids die only if their tree dies, and so will defend their homes ferociously. The quickest way to kill a caryatid would be using fire, but this method will almost surely destroy the treasures she hides in the hollows under her tree's roots.

Coclia, Giant Snail

HP 8 Morale 7        Shell -D6 Grinding tongue D6

Special: Very slow, attack and defense are at DR10. Its rugged tongue destroys a bit of armor on each lick.

HUGE AND BONELESS, IT DWELLS IN UNDERGROUND CAVERNS, DUNGEONS AND DAMP FORESTS, CARRYING AROUND ITS GREAT SHELL. Very few know that a coclia can leave its shell, its rubbery body allowing it to squeeze through any opening. Its meat is disgusting, but the shell is really valuable. In contrast to regular snails, a coclia is carnivorous.

Effingo, Doppelganger

HP 8 Morale 7        Any armor        Any weapon

Special: Becomes the perfect copy of any of its victims in just 1 turn.

NO ONE KNOWS WHAT AN EFFINGO REALLY LOOKS LIKE. This shape-changing creature is intelligent and evil and able to morph into the exact form of any creature it kills. An effingo doesn’t sleep, doesn’t eat and doesn’t drink, but it can fake these activities if required. Its only limitations are humor, which it can’t comprehend, and powers, which it can’t cast. When killed, an effingo dissolves in a puddle of blood, flesh and bones, letting out a sinister and piercing scream.

Lamia, Vampire

HP 18 Morale 10        Armor -D4        Fangs D6        Sword D8

Special: It can shapechange into various forms. If it bites a creature with blood, it regains HP equal to the damage dealt.

AMONG THE MOST FEARED OF THE UNDEAD, THEY HAUNT RUINS, TOMBS, CRYPTS AND OTHER DESERTED PLACES, BUT FLY OUT AT NIGHT TO DRINK BLOOD FROM PEOPLE. A lamia usually takes the form of a human, a wolf or a giant bat; only if it’s reduced to 0 hit points, it becomes mist and flees to its coffin to regenerate. Anyone slain by a lamia will return from death in three days, under the control of their slayer. Only fire, sunlight and holy water can destroy a lamia forever.

Letifer, Basilisk

HP 9 Morale 9        Scales -D4        Maw D8

Special: Its gaze petrifies: DR14 on attacks and defense to avoid it, or meet its eyes and become stone in D3 turns.

THE “KING OF SNAKES” LOOKS MUCH LIKE A VERY LARGE SERPENT WITH FOUR STUMPY LEGS AND A CROWNLIKE GROWTH ON ITS HEAD. Its hide may be of any color, but is usually very bright and dyschromic. Usually lives in underground caverns or wild and tangled thickets, littered by the statue-esque bodies of its victims. Anyone who looks a letifer in the eyes will be petrified; all equipment they carry will also be turned to stone. To revert this, the letifer’s heart must be carved out and its blood splattered on the petrified subject. The heart contains enough blood for just one ritual.

Limus, Ooze

HP 20 Morale 12        No armor        Acidic embrace D6

Special: Weapons or armor made of metal worsen with each hit. Weapons made of wood or bone dissolve instantly on touch, as armor made of leather or fur. Fire deals double damage.

ALWAYS HUNGRY AND MINDLESS, IT WILL ATTACK ANY CREATURE IT COMES ACROSS. Its corrosive body kills and digests living things at the same time, and can dissolve wood and corrode metal. It cannot affect stone however, so it travels on ceilings and walls, and can slowly pass through small openings. Avoids fire at all costs.

Noctambula, Walking Death

HP 21 Morale 12        Death shroud-D6        Fist D10

Special: Its gaze curses its victims. Anyone gazed by the noctambula attacks and defends on DR16 until the curse is removed. Unclean scrolls alway test Presence at DR14 against a noctambula.

THE NOCTAMBULA IS A LARGE, POWERFUL EVIL ENTITY WHICH ONLY SEEKS TO SPREAD DEATH. It is usually created or summoned by a more powerful being, and it appears as a horned giant deep jet black in color with no visible eyes. Daylight disturbs it, but doesn’t harm it like it used to anymore. The mere presence of a noctambula is anathema to life, spoiling food and water (even holy water and potions), leaving decay along its path. Undead are naturally attracted to it and usually a great number follows in its steps.

Vermis, Worm

HP 12 Morale 8        No armor        Bite D6

Special: On a defense fumble, a creature is swallowed and dies in D2 turns.

THIS GROTESQUE GRAY WORM IS ABOUT 10 METERS LONG. It is a meat-eater and can be found nearly anywhere, waiting in loose soil just below the surface. Whenever a small group of animals or humans pass, it shoots up out of the ground and begins biting with its large mouth and sharp teeth, occasionally swallowing the smaller ones. Its insides though are warm and oddly comfortable.
